Embracing Excellence Over Perfection
November 5, 2025
Like many people, I have struggled to figure out the difference between “excellence” and “perfectionism.” A certain level of perfectionism is rewarded in many spaces, and after receiving validation for this way of thinking for years, it’s easy to get into an all-or-nothing approach to life. Perfectionism is a paradigm where a certain type of success is dangerously addictive — and failure is final.
I’ve been actively shifting to a standard of excellence that acknowledges my areas of growth. What I’ve experienced has been incredible: it’s easier for me to say these phrases now:
- “I don’t know.”
- “Can I learn from you?”
- “I want to grow”
The shame – a feeling like my body is on fire – is gradually fading.
Can you identify?
Breaking Free from the Shackles of Perfectionism
For the longest time, I believed that perfectionism was the key to success. Every project, every task, and every aspect of my life had to be flawless. This pursuit of perfection, however, left little room for mistakes, experimentation, and, most importantly, personal growth. The fear of failure became paralyzing, hindering my ability to explore new opportunities and learn from challenges.
The Shift to Excellence: A Liberating Journey
Recognizing the limitations of perfectionism, I embarked on a journey towards excellence. Unlike perfectionism, excellence doesn’t demand flawlessness; instead, it encourages continuous improvement and the acknowledgment of our evolving strengths and weaknesses. It’s about setting high standards while allowing for the inevitable setbacks that accompany growth.
The Power of Vulnerability in Learning
One of the most significant shifts in my mindset has been embracing vulnerability. Saying “I don’t know” or admitting a lack of expertise used to be a source of shame. Now, it’s a powerful admission that opens the door to learning. By asking, “Can I learn from you?” I’ve not only expanded my knowledge but also forged meaningful connections with mentors and colleagues who appreciate authenticity.
Strength in Acknowledging Areas of Growth
Rather than seeing my areas of growth as weaknesses, I’ve learned to perceive them as opportunities for improvement. Saying, “I want to strengthen my skills,” has become a mantra for personal and professional development. This shift in perspective has transformed challenges into stepping stones, creating a positive environment where improvement is not only welcomed but celebrated.
Perfectionism vs. Excellence: A Tale of Two Mindsets
- Perfectionism says: “That didn’t go well. Quit so you won’t be embarrassed again.”
- Excellence says: “That didn’t go well. I’ve got a plan to get better.”
This simple yet profound shift in mindset has been a game-changer for me. Instead of seeing setbacks as reasons to quit, excellence encourages perseverance and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Join the Journey: Embrace Excellence, Embrace Growth
If you find yourself caught in the trap of perfectionism, consider making the shift towards excellence. It’s a journey of liberation, where mistakes are stepping stones and vulnerability is a strength. Embrace the power of saying, “I don’t know,” ask for guidance, and express your desire to strengthen your skills. The growth that follows is not just professional but profoundly personal.
